EK Powe works collaboratively with Duke University to provide students with extra support through tutoring. Currently, four different, Duke-led tutoring programs are up and running at EK Powe: America Counts, America Reads, Partners for Success, and Project Hope. Powe's students truly enjoy the opportunity to work one on one, or in a small group, with Duke Tutors. In addition to running the various tutoring projects at Powe, Duke University in involved in other ways. During the 2006-2007 school year, a Duke photographer took many pictures of Powe's students and staff in action. These lively photos are now hung throughout the school's halls as well as outside on the school's grounds. In the fall of 2006, a group of Duke seniors selected Powe's proposal for a community outreach activity. The group designed and implemented a project designed to support teacher morale.
Support Through Tutoring
EK Powe and Duke University work together to provide various tutoring programs during the traditional school day. Tutors work with students in a variety of ways, by both supporting the teacher during whole class lessons and assisting specific students in a one on one or small group setting. Different tutoring programs focus on the different needs of our students, including literacy and math remediation and enrichment and English language learner support.
Reseach Triangle Schools Partnership with UNC
The Research Triangle Schools Partnership (RTSP) is a collaborative effort between the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and four school districts: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City, Chatham County, Durham Public Schools and Orange County. The partnership is dedicated to school improvement and the enhancement of learning opportunities for all children.
To accomplish these objectives, the RTSP programs aim to: • Renew and restructure the public school curriculum. • Renew and improve professional preparation programs. • Establish continuing professional development opportunities for both public school and university educators. • Conduct organized programs of school-based research designed to improve practice. • Promote on-going knowledge dissemination and dialogue between schools and school districts. To achieve these goals, the RTSP engages pre-K-12 public school faculty and administrators, parents, university faculty, staff, and students in a wide variety of collaborative activities. RTSP projects impact not only the pre-service training of teachers and other school professionals, but also the induction of beginning-level educators and the professional development of career educators.
