E.K. Powe serves many English language learners, including many whose first language is Spanish.  Children receive English as a Second Language services from our two certified ESL teachers, either in the regular classroom or in pull-out sessions. They also assist in obtaining volunteer tutors and translators. E.K. Powe also hosts adult ESL classes in partnership with Durham Tech.

Exceptional Children's Services PDF Print E-mail
There are several exceptional children's program resource teachers. These resource teachers work with students who spend the majority of the day in a regular education program, but need additional resources for success at school. Most of EK Powe's exceptional children are served in regular education classrooms through an inclusion model. Through this inclusion program, children from the regular education program and exceptional children's program have the opportunity to be included with each other in many settings. Powe also has three self-contained exceptional children's classes. Two are for children with developmental needs(K-2 & 3-5); generally those with relatively mild cognitive limitations. The third class services children with multiple disabilities. Some of the children in the self-contained classes spend part of their day in regular-education.
